Brief Introduction of Foreign Language Teaching Department
Foreign Langauge Teaching Department, formerly known as the Department of Foreign Languages, School of Basic Medical Sciences, was renamed as School of Foreign Languages in January 2004 and Foreign Langauge Teaching Department in June 2019.
There are 54 faculty members in the department, including 14 associate professors/researchers. The department is made up of Department Office, Student Affairs Office, Resource Center and five teaching and research sections (two College English Teaching and Research Sections, Postgraduate English Teaching and Research Section, Long-term program English Teaching and Research Section, and Minority Languages Teaching and Research Section).
At present, the Department is responsible for fostering English majors and teaching four languages, English, French, German and Spanish, to non-English majors of undergraduate studies, junior college education, postgraduate studies and further-education. As a teaching unit of foreign languages, the department is always putting teaching in the priority. In the recent two consecutive semesters, in terms of the results of online evaluation of teaching and learning, published by the Quality Evaluation Office of Nanjing Univeristy of Chinese Medicine, the department ranked the third and the second in the university. Teachers are encouraged to participate in various teaching competitions at all levels. In the past five years, they have won one national third prize, two provincial first prizes, seven provincial second prizes and nine provincial third prizes.
The department cooperates with the main disciplines of Chinese medicine in the university, and carries out scientific research on Chinese medicine plus foreign languages. In the past five years, the department has undertaken one youth project of the National Social Science Fund, four humanities and social science projects of the Ministry of Education, one project of the 13th Five-Year Plan of Jiangsu Province, and 17 bureau-level projects such as the Philosophy and Social Science Fund of Jiangsu Universities.
The department always adheres to high standards in training English majors. The scores of TEM-4 and TEM-8 are outstanding. The average passing rates of TEM-4 and TEM-8 in recent five years are 88.94% and 75.58% respectively, which are higher than the national average passing rates, 39.07% and 36.25% respectively. Since the establishment of the English discipline, nearly 100 students have taken postgraduate courses in key domestic universities such as Peking University, Nanjing University, Fudan University and Beijing Foreign Studies University; some have been to the United States, Britain, Australia and Hong Kong for further study. In recent five years, the average employment rate of English majors has reached over 95%.
In the future, in accordance with the university development strategies of “strengthening the university by talents, climbing the disciplinary peak, opening and cooperating, and cultural guidance”, the department will strive to do better in teaching, personnel training, scientific research, discipline construction and social services, making greater contributions to the high quality development of the university.
